Nikos Kazantzakis, born in Heraklion in the 1880s under Ottoman rule, was deeply influenced by his strict father, Captain Michalis. Struggling with metaphysical and existential questions, he explored the works of Nietzsche, Bergson, and various philosophies, even spending six months in a monastery. Kazantzakis studied law in Athens and philosophy in Paris, and as a traveler, worked as a translator and correspondent. He began writing in his 20s across multiple genres, but gained fame for his prose later in life. His notable works include “Zorba the Greek,” “Freedom and Death,” “The Greek Passion,” “Report to Greco,” and “The Last Temptation of Christ.” The latter led to his excommunication, and after his death in 1957, he was buried on the Martinengo Bastion in Heraklion city with the inscription: “I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free”.
